Can You Get DARK SOULS: REMASTERED for Free? Sharing, Sales and Safer Ways to Pay Less
DARK SOULS: REMASTERED is a paid PC game. Steam Families, giveaways, reward credit and sale timing can cut the cost; this is what each one really offers.
DARK SOULS: REMASTERED is a paid game, and we compare its PC prices. A household member's Steam copy may cover solo play, and comparing stores before a sale is the dependable way to pay less. The card below leads to our price comparison, where some store links earn us a commission.
Is DARK SOULS: REMASTERED free anywhere?
Not legitimately. It is a paid game, developed by QLOC and FromSoftware and published by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment. The remaster came out on 25 May 2018 and brings the game that started the series back to Lordran in high definition at 60 frames per second.
Years after the remaster, Lordran still draws a crowd: 4,669 players were in it on 2 October 2026, when Steam counted 155,490 reviews and 92 % of them recommended the game.
Avoid any site that offers the game as a free download. Such copies are unlicensed, and unofficial download sites are a common source of malware. Buy from an authorized seller, borrow through Steam Families, or claim a promotion the store has posted on its own site.
Ways to play or pay less
Using a Steam Family copy
The QLOC and FromSoftware remaster carried the Family Sharing label in Steam’s store data on 6 October 2026, the day we looked. In Steam Families, members of the same household can launch games another member bought, from the shared family library; saves and achievements stay separate, and ownership never moves to the borrower. The limit is one player per copy at a time. The game has online multiplayer as well as its solo campaign, so if you and the owner want to play together, a shared copy is not enough: the borrower cannot join the owner’s session on it. Check the family library first.
Free game promotions
Stores occasionally run limited-time giveaways of games you keep afterwards. Anything on offer at the moment appears on our free games page.
Reward apps
Some apps pay points for playing mobile games or completing tasks, and let you exchange the points for gift cards that can be spent on games. Which apps and offers you get depends on your device and country; collecting enough can take days or weeks; there is no guaranteed amount; and each app sets its own age limits and payout rules. You still buy the game, with credit you earned. We have no commercial relationship with any reward app.
Comparing stores and waiting for a sale
Before a Souls fan pays full price, it is worth a glance at the card, which shows every store we currently track for this remaster alongside what each asks now. Upcoming Steam events are on our Steam sale dates page. Steam offers a single version of the remaster, so you do not need to compare editions there.
What its price history shows
Our price history for this remaster covers more than two years. The deepest monthly low in that record came in February 2025, at 62 % below today’s Steam list price. More useful for timing: it sold below the list price at a store we track in 12 of the last 12 months, so paying full price has rarely been necessary. Each month’s low is in the DARK SOULS: REMASTERED price history.
PC requirements and languages
The remaster is modest by current standards. A Windows PC with 6 GB of RAM meets Steam’s floor; 8 GB is the suggested amount, and the install takes 8 GB of disk space. Processor and graphics card names for both tiers are on our DARK SOULS: REMASTERED system requirements page.
Steam showed full controller support and 12 languages on 6 October 2026.
