Can You Get Borderlands 4 for Free? Sharing, Giveaways and Paying Less
Borderlands 4 is a paid PC game. Why a shared Steam Family copy will not cover co-op, what giveaways and reward apps can do, and where to compare prices.
Borderlands 4 is a paid game from Gearbox Software and 2K. Steam Families can let someone in your household play the owner's copy, but co-op partners each need a copy of their own. The card below leads to our price comparison, where some store links earn us a commission.
Borderlands 4 is not a free game
You have to buy it. Borderlands 4 is a looter shooter with an enormous number of weapons, in which you play one of four new Vault Hunters trying to escape a hidden and hostile planet, alone or in co-op. Gearbox Software developed it, 2K published it, the ESRB rates it Mature, and it was released on 12 September 2025. We compare PC prices.
A “free Borderlands 4” file on an unofficial site is a pirated copy of a big-budget release, and such files are one of the most common ways people end up with malware. Pay through an authorized store, play a household copy via Steam Families, or claim a promotion the store itself confirms.
Steam buyers are divided over it. Of 86,238 reviews counted on 2 October 2026, 58 % were positive, and 5,923 players were online that day.
Sharing a copy, and waiting for a free one
Steam Families and co-op
Our check of Steam’s store data on 6 October 2026 showed Borderlands 4 listed for Family Sharing. In a Steam Family, the accounts of one household share a library: a game one member bought can be installed by the others, who keep their own saves and achievements. The purchase stays with the member who made it.
Borderlands 4 is built around co-op, and this is where sharing falls short. A shared copy can be used by one account at a time, so a family member playing the owner’s copy cannot join the owner’s co-op session; two people playing together need two copies. Single-player runs are fine. Check the family library before you count on it.
Store giveaways
Our free games page lists the games stores are giving away at this moment. If a free copy of anything is real, it will be there.
Reward apps
Some apps pay points for playing mobile games or completing tasks, and let you exchange the points for gift cards that can be spent on games. Which apps and offers you get depends on your device and country; collecting enough can take days or weeks; there is no guaranteed amount; and each app sets its own age limits and payout rules. You still buy the game, with credit you earned. We have no commercial relationship with any reward app.

Three editions on Steam
Steam sells it as Borderlands 4, Borderlands 4 Deluxe Edition and Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition. A low price for a key only helps if it is for the edition you want, so check which of the three a listing names; the game page’s offer table shows the edition whenever stores differ on it.

Questions
Will one family copy cover two Vault Hunters in the same match?
No. A family copy is usable by one account at a time, so each co-op player needs their own.
Do you compare prices for Borderlands 3 too?
Yes. Borderlands 3, an earlier Gearbox Software game, has its own price page with its current offers.
