Rust is a paid online survival game from Facepunch Studios. There is no legitimate free version, so the useful question is how to pay less for it. The card below leads to our price comparison, where some store links earn us a commission.

Is Rust free to play?

No: Rust is a paid game. Facepunch Studios develops and publishes it, and it was released on 8 February 2018. The idea is simple: you wake up on an island where the wildlife, the environment and the other players are all a threat, and your only goal is to survive another night. Steam lists it as multiplayer, with PvP and online co-op. Its ESRB rating is Mature, so it is meant for adults.

Its Steam figures are large: on 2 October 2026 it held 87 % positive reviews out of 1,400,940, and 127,617 players were online in it that day.

Sites that promise a free Rust download offer unlicensed copies, and they are a common way to pick up malware. Get your copy from an authorized store, or from a promotion that Facepunch or the store announces itself.

Why borrowing is not an option

When we checked Steam’s store data on 6 October 2026, Rust was not marked for Family Sharing. So Steam Families is not a way to play it here: each player needs to own the game.

What can lower the price

Store giveaways

Stores occasionally hand out games for free for a short time. The ones on offer right now are on our free games page.

Reward apps

Some apps pay points for playing mobile games or completing tasks, and let you exchange the points for gift cards that can be spent on games. Which apps and offers you get depends on your device and country; collecting enough can take days or weeks; there is no guaranteed amount; and each app sets its own age limits and payout rules. You still buy the game, with credit you earned. We have no commercial relationship with any reward app.

Comparing stores and timing the purchase

Since every Rust player needs a copy, comparing matters: the card shows every store we currently track and the lowest Rust price listed right now. Steam sells a single edition, simply called Rust, so there is no bundle to choose between.

Our Steam sale dates page has the calendar of Valve’s upcoming events if you can hold off.

Rust’s price over time

We have followed Rust’s price for more than two years. In each of the last 12 months it could be bought below Steam’s list price at one of the stores we track, so paying full price is rarely necessary. The lowest monthly price we recorded came in October 2026, 50 % under today’s Steam list price. See the Rust price history for every month.

What your PC needs

Budget for a capable machine: Rust’s Steam page asks for 12 GB of RAM at minimum (16 GB recommended) and a 45 GB install. Steam also lists Mac and Linux system requirements. The full breakdown is on the Rust system requirements page.

On 6 October 2026, Steam listed 25 languages for Rust, from Arabic and Czech to Vietnamese.
