Project Zomboid is a paid zombie survival game from The Indie Stone, sold for PC. A relative's copy shared through Steam Families may let you try it before buying, though that route has limits for multiplayer. The card below leads to our price comparison, where some store links earn us a commission.

Is Project Zomboid free to play?

No. It is a paid game, and there is no free-to-play version of it. Project Zomboid drops you into a zombie outbreak where staying alive means scavenging, building, crafting, farming and fishing, alone or with other people, on a large and highly configurable sandbox map. The Indie Stone both develops and publishes it, and it was first released on 8 November 2013.

Almost thirteen years after that first release, Project Zomboid was still labelled Early Access (Steam, 6 October 2026). Buying it means paying for a build The Indie Stone is still changing, so survival systems can shift between updates.

Survivors on Steam mostly recommend it: by 2 October 2026, 94 % of 483,313 reviews were positive, and that same day 46,033 players were trying to outlast the outbreak at once.

If a website offers Project Zomboid as a free download, skip it. Those copies are unlicensed and such sites are a frequent source of malware; stick to authorized stores, Steam Families or a promotion you can verify on the store itself.

Routes that lower the cost

Using a Steam Families library

When we pulled Project Zomboid’s Steam store data on 6 October 2026, the Family Sharing category was on it. Through Steam Families, the household feature Valve runs, a relative who owns the zombie sandbox can make it playable from your family library. The purchase stays with the owner, while the person borrowing it keeps separate saves and achievements.

There is a catch for a game people often play together. A single copy runs for one person at a time, so a borrowed copy cannot join the owner’s server or split the same session over two accounts. Solo survival works fine this way; a shared run with the owner needs a second copy. Look for Project Zomboid in your family library before you plan a long solo save around it.

Store giveaways

Stores sometimes run short giveaways where a game is yours to keep once claimed. The ones running right now are on our free games page.

Reward apps

Some apps pay points for playing mobile games or completing tasks, and let you exchange the points for gift cards that can be spent on games. Which apps and offers you get depends on your device and country; collecting enough can take days or weeks; there is no guaranteed amount; and each app sets its own age limits and payout rules. You still buy the game, with credit you earned. We have no commercial relationship with any reward app.
