Can You Get Terraria for Free? Sharing a Copy and Paying Less

Terraria is a paid PC game. Steam Families can cover solo play, but co-op friends each need a copy; here is how giveaways, reward credit and sales fit in.

Terraria is a paid game, and it has been since Re-Logic released it in 2011. A family member's Steam copy may let you play alone, but building a world with friends means more than one copy. The card below leads to our price comparison, where some store links earn us a commission.

Do you have to pay for Terraria?

Yes. Terraria is a paid action-adventure game from Re-Logic, which both developed and published it, first released on 16 May 2011. You dig, fight, explore and build across a world that changes as you go. On PC it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. For parents: the ESRB classification is Teen.

Fifteen years on, the digging has not stopped: on 2 October 2026 Steam recorded 40,651 people in Terraria at once, and the game had 1,557,200 reviews, 97 % of them positive.

Sites that list Terraria as a “free download” are passing around unlicensed copies, and that kind of site is a common way to pick up malware. Get it from an authorized store, through Steam Families, or from a giveaway that the store itself has announced.

Options that don’t involve buying your own copy

Borrowing from a household member

Steam marked Terraria for Family Sharing when we checked its store data on 6 October 2026. Steam Families is built for one household: a member’s purchases appear in the family library, others can play them with their own save files and achievements, and the buyer keeps the licence. Only one person can use a given copy at a time. That is the catch with Terraria, which supports online co-op: someone borrowing the owner’s copy cannot join the owner’s world at the same moment, because that would need two copies. Look in your family library to confirm it is shared.

Giveaways

Now and then a store gives a game away for a short period, and you keep it once claimed. The free games page lists any game that a store is currently giving away.

Reward apps

Some apps pay points for playing mobile games or completing tasks, and let you exchange the points for gift cards that can be spent on games. Which apps and offers you get depends on your device and country; collecting enough can take days or weeks; there is no guaranteed amount; and each app sets its own age limits and payout rules. You still buy the game, with credit you earned. We have no commercial relationship with any reward app.

Getting your own copy for less

Before you pay for Re-Logic’s sandbox, compare: the card shows every store we currently track for it, so you can see who undercuts whom this week. Plan around Valve’s seasonal events with our Steam sale dates.

Which Terraria are you buying?

Steam sells three packages: Terraria, Terraria - Commercial License and Terraria 4-Pack. The Terraria 4-Pack is aimed at groups who each want their own copy for co-op, so a household or friend group can weigh it against single purchases. Whichever key you look at, check which of the three it is for before you pay.

Its price record

We have more than two years of price history for Terraria. The deepest monthly low came in October 2026, at 50 % below today’s Steam list price. It sold below the list price at a store we track in 9 of the last 12 months, so discounts are frequent but not constant. Month-by-month lows are in the Terraria price history.

Solo, co-op or PvP, and in which language

Terraria works solo, in online co-op, and in player-versus-player matches. A gamepad works fully, according to Steam’s 6 October 2026 listing, and the game ships in 9 languages: English plus French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese. Steam’s data does not give a RAM or storage figure we could read, so check the requirements on the store page before you buy for an older PC.

Questions

Can my friend and I play together on one Steam Family copy?

No. Co-op needs both of you in the game at once, and a shared copy works for one player at a time.

Does Terraria run on a Mac or Linux PC?

Yes. Steam's store data lists Mac and Linux versions alongside Windows.
