Can You Get Marathon for Free? What Actually Lowers the Cost
Marathon is a paid online shooter from Bungie. Family Sharing, giveaways and reward apps each have limits for a PvP-only game; here is what they really do.
Marathon is a paid shooter, and it is played online against other people. That makes a shared family copy less useful than usual, so a discount is the main lever. The card below leads to our price comparison, where some store links earn us a commission.
Marathon is not free-to-play
Marathon is a paid game. Bungie developed and published it, and it arrived in March 2026. Players drop onto the abandoned colony of Tau Ceti IV to hunt for valuable loot and try to survive in first-person firefights where a lot is at stake.
Copies offered as a “free download” are unlicensed, and pirated installers are a common way for malware to reach a PC. A run on Tau Ceti IV should start with a licence from an authorized seller, a Steam Family that already owns Bungie’s shooter, or a promotion you have confirmed on the seller’s own site.
For Bungie’s Tau Ceti IV shooter, 77 % of 64,258 Steam reviews counted as positive on 2 October 2026, and the concurrent count that day read 1,120 players.
Paying less than full price for Marathon
Steam Families has a catch here
Steam’s own feature list for Bungie’s shooter carried the Family Sharing label when we read it on 6 October 2026. Steam Families lets the members of one household play games another member owns, from the family library, with their own progress and achievements; the purchase still belongs to the buyer. A single Marathon licence serves one runner at a time. Marathon has no single-player mode, only online multiplayer and PvP, so a borrowed copy works only while the owner is not playing and cannot join the owner’s match. Squads need a copy each. Check that Marathon really appears among your household’s shared games before relying on it.
Store giveaways
If a store is giving a game away right now, you will find it on our free games page for as long as the offer lasts.
Reward apps
Some apps pay points for playing mobile games or completing tasks, and let you exchange the points for gift cards that can be spent on games. Which apps and offers you get depends on your device and country; collecting enough can take days or weeks; there is no guaranteed amount; and each app sets its own age limits and payout rules. You still buy the game, with credit you earned. We have no commercial relationship with any reward app.
Discounts so far
Marathon is new, but it has already been sold below its list price. Its deepest monthly low in our records came in October 2026, at 52 % below today’s Steam list price, and across the stores we track it sold for less than the list price in 10 of the last 10 months. The month-by-month figures are in the game’s price history. If you can wait, line Bungie’s shooter up against our Steam sale dates.
Standard or Deluxe
Steam sells Marathon and Marathon Deluxe Edition. A key is for one of the two, so check the product name before you pay and compare like with like. The card shows every store we currently track; we compare PC prices.
Specs for a Tau Ceti IV run
Steam lists 8 GB of RAM as the minimum and recommends 16 GB, double the minimum. Marathon’s processor and graphics card lines are collected on our Marathon system requirements page. When we checked on 6 October 2026, Steam listed 13 languages, almost all with full audio.

Questions
Can I play Marathon offline or solo?
Steam lists it as multiplayer and online PvP only, so you need an internet connection and other players.
Does a Family Sharing copy let two of us play together?
No. One licence runs for one player at a time, so the owner and the borrower cannot be in a match at once.
